Silk cocoon craft

Silk cocoon craft was started by Mr. Chidambaram C.A & Mrs. Kamala Chidambaram on 06-12-1995 on the name & style of M/s Lion [Ind] International Agencies at Salem, Tamilnadu. The project is to utilize the waste cocoons - “Converting the waste into wealth”. It’s a novel concept of fashionable gift handicrafts which is a symbol of flight of fancy with traditional flavor and aesthetic designs that have a utilitarian point of gift crafts which speaks with silent and subtle beauty and which will thrive not only in India, but globally, where there will be admired bought and displayed at their sweet homes.

Silk is a "natural" protein fiber, some forms of which can be woven into textiles. The best-known type of silk is obtained from Cocoons made by the larvae of the silkworm Bombyx mori reared in captivity (sericulture). The shimmering appearance for which silk is prized comes from the fibres' traingular prism-like structure which allows silk cloth to refract incoming light at different angles. Silk is also the strongest natural fiber known to man.

Sericulture is an agro based, cultivation of mulberry and silk warm rearing are agriculture oriented - whereas reeling of silk from silkworm cocoons is a cottage based industry. Raw Silk reeled out from the silk worm cocoons is the raw material used for weaving silk fabrics. The waste & bye products obtained in this activity bring additional income.

"Cut-cocoons" - In Govt Cocoon Markets and Reasearch Centers, random samples are cut and their shellweight calculated, cut cocoons of various sizes and shapes are collected and auctioned. This is also used in the production of spun silk in SPUN SILK Mills.

"Cut Cocoons" are unfit for reeling, these are utilized to develop fashinable handicrafts by making use of these cut cocoons and pierced cocoons to various handi designed craft works.
